Fehn presented "The New Landscape of Audits; MICs, MACs, RACs and ZPICs," to an audience of health information management professionals and medical coding specialists at the AHIMA-ACMCS Joint Clinical Coding Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs) are government contractors paid on a contingency basis to recover Medicare overpayments to health care providers and to identify underpayments. The program is being expanded to include Medicaid RACs as well. Medicaid Integrity Program contractors (MICs) perform a similar role in relation to the Medicaid program. Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) process Medicare claims. Zone Program Integrity Contractors (ZPICs) are fraud investigators who also conduct post-payment audits for Medicare.
