Study Connects Car Crashes and Frequency of Chronic Pain in Victims

September 18, 2011 /Government PR News/ -- A new study has found that people more frequently suffer from chronic pain after being injured in motor-vehicle accidents than following other incidents that shock the body. Whether car crashes exacerbate existing conditions or trigger new persistent aches, victims must deal with the lingering pain and discomfort. However, with knowledgeable legal counsel, people suffering chronic pain after car accidents may be able to obtain compensation for their pain and medical expenses.
Chronic Pain Study
In a recent chronic-pain study, more than 2,000 people were interviewed about the impact of six traumatic bodily events at intervals spanning more than four years. Researchers at the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and Dentistry in Scotland, led by Gareth Jones, asked patients about their experiences with motor-vehicle crashes, workplace injuries, surgeries, fractures, hospitalizations and childbirths. Almost 250 participants indicated new cases of chronic pain during the study, with one-third citing one of the six traumatic events as the cause.
Although the researchers could not establish a connection between new cases of chronic pain and hospitalizations, surgeries or childbirths, they did find that participants who were car accident victims were 84 percent more likely to suffer symptoms of new widespread and constant pain.
Chronic Pain Symptoms
Chronic pain, as opposed to acute pain, persists over time and is difficult to treat medically. It often occurs when injuries heal improperly or after they supposedly heal, but cause other medical issues. Chronic pain may consist of shooting, burning or aching pain as well as discomfort, soreness, tightness or stiffness. It also may lead to other health concerns like fatigue, disability, a weak immune system, depression or other physiological problems.
Legal Help and Compensation
Patients with chronic pain, especially following car accidents, deserve experienced legal counsel to help improve their quality of life. Holding people accountable for accidents that caused or worsened chronic pain helps those in constant suffering obtain compensation for their medical and rehabilitative costs as well as pain and suffering caused by the crash.
If you or your loved one has developed chronic pain symptoms after a car accident, contact a personal injury attorney today to discuss your legal rights and options for possible compensation.
