In April of 1991, he reported to Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla., where he completed initial flight training with the "Wildcats" Squadron VT-10 at the Naval Air Station. He went on to complete advanced navigator training at Mather Air Force Base in California, where he earned the designation of naval flight officer. Magwood then joined Fleet Replacement Squadron VP-30 and completed P-3C training at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville. In March of 1993, he reported to VP-49 Squadron, where he made deployment to Keflavik, Iceland. Finally, he reported to VP-5 Squadron, making tri-site deployment to Keflavik, Iceland, Sigonella, Italy and Puerto Rico.

Currently, Magwood serves as a deputy officer and director of special programs for COMOPTEVFOR's warfare division and operations test and evaluation force. There, he specializes in the analysis of airborne, anti-submarine warfare, command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and multi-spectral and threat systems. In addition to overseeing operations, Magwood manages evaluation systems, manages test plans, reviews documented orders and supervises equipment inventory as well as fleet support assets for testing purposes. During his tenure with COMOPTEVFOR, he has served as an operations officer for such high-profile assignments as Operation Active Endeavor, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

A decorated naval officer, Magwood was presented with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal on seven occasions. He received four letters of commendation and was honored with the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal four times. Magwood has received letters of appreciation and citation for his dedicated service and was presented with the Aviator of the Year Award by the Association of Naval Aviation.
